Specimen Requirements

Patient Preparation

1. Patient should eat an adequate meal 2 hours prior to draw as specified by physician. Patient is allowed his/her usual meal (breakfast or lunch).

2. At end of 2 hours, draw specimen as follows:

 

Preferred:
Container/Tube: Green cap-yellow ring Top (Lithium Heparin Gel) tube
Minimum Volume: 1.0 mL 
Collection Instructions:  Centrifuge within 2 hours of collection.
Also Acceptable:
Container/Tube: Plain, Red Top or Serum gel (SST-Gel) tube

Reference Values

65-120 mg/dl

Alarm values (automatic call-back):  <50 mg/dL or >400 mg/dL

Specimen Stability

Ambient: 8 hours
Refrigerate: 48 hours
Frozen: aliquot for longer storage
