Specimen Requirements

Patient Preparation
1. Patient should be on at least a 150 g carbohydrate diet for 3 days prior to testing and should be off all hypoglycemic drugs, such as birth control pills, aspirin, diuretics, ethanol, and steroids.
2. Patient should not smoke, eat, drink coffee, or exercise 10 to 16 hours prior to and during test.
3. Patient may have water during test.

 

Preferred:
Container/Tube: Green cap-yellow ring Top (Lithium Heparin Gel) tube
Minimum Volume: 1.0 mL 
Collection Instructions:  

If fasting specimen is >150 mg/dL, contact ordering physician for instructions before administering GlucolaTM. Draw fasting and at 1 hour, 2 hours, and 3 hours after 75g glucose drink administration. Label specimens appropriately. Centrifuge within 2 hours of collection.
Also Acceptable:
Container/Tube: Plain, Red Top or Serum gel (SST-Gel) tube

Reference Values

Fasting:  70-110 mg/dL

Fasting alarm values (automatic call-back):  <41 mg/dL or >499 mg/dL
Obstetric glucose tolerance:  no established reference values

Specimen Stability

Ambient: 8 hours
Refrigerate: 48 hours
Frozen: aliquot for longer storage
